I'm wondering if the transitions are knitted in rather than in the yarn? Maybe you could use a slip stitch and /or intarsia to make the colour changes?
I think the original may well use different yarns to get the overall effect... I wish the photo showed the skirt more clearly. Either way I'm not sure that much fiber is in the budget ;) Still, it would be a fun project!
